Computer Training Classes in March and April

 

The Atlantic City Free Public Library has scheduled its free computer training classes for March and April. All classes are for Atlantic City Library members.

The computer training sessions are free and on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending must bring their Atlantic City Library card to class. Please call (609) 345-2269 for more information.

 

Walk-in Job Skills Lab

Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5, 12, 19, 26

Staff members can guide attendees through the process of searching for jobs, creating an email address, updating a resume or completing an online employment application. This service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Basic Internet and Typing Skills

Wednesdays from 1:30-3 p.m.

March 1, 22 and April 12

Learn how to visit different websites and position your hands on the keyboard.

 

Email Setup and Practice

Wednesdays from 1:30-3 p.m.

March 8 and April 19

A valid email address is needed to perform many important tasks, such as applying for jobs online. Learn how to compose emails, send emails, view your inbox, attach pictures and more.

 

Google Docs

Wednesdays from 1:30-3 p.m.

March 15 and April 5

Explore Google Docs, a free web-based word processor. Learn how to create, edit, format, download and print documents. Participants will need to create or have an existing Gmail account before taking this class.

 

Google Maps

Wednesday, March 29, from 1:30-3 p.m.

Google Maps provides maps and directions for travel by foot, public transportation, and automobile. It also has interactive maps and satellite images.

 

Smartphone Basics

Wednesday, April 26, from 1:30-3 p.m.

Cover the basics of using an Android smartphone, such as Samsung, LG, ZTE and Huawei. Learn how to set up and check voicemail, add new contacts, send and receive text messages, connect to a WiFi network, browse the Internet and manage apps.

Programs for children and teens in March and April

The Atlantic City Free Public Library has scheduled programs for children and teenagers for March and April

All programs are free. Children nine years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Please call (609) 345-2269, ext. 3050, for more information.

 

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

 

Pre-school Rhyme Time

Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6, 13, 20, 27

Features stories, songs, finger plays, creative movement and simple crafts for ages 3-5. Family and siblings are welcome. Library story times are a fun way to help children develop skills they will need to be ready to read. Explore the early literacy skills of singing, playing, reading, talking and writing in each story time. Child care groups are asked to please call in advance.

 

Baby Bounce and Play Group 

Thursdays at 11:30 a.m.

March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6, 13, 20, 27

This program is designed to introduce infants (ages 0-24 months) to the world of sounds and stories. Stories, songs, rhymes and movement help build pre-reading skills for our littlest library lovers. An informal play group immediately follows this story time.

 

Tween Days in the Teen Lounge

Saturdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Kids ages 9-12 are invited to play video games in the Teen Space. Participants need a library card in good standing to participate.

 

LEGO Club

Comic Drawing Lessons

Thursdays at 3:30 p.m.

Marvel/DC Comics illustrator Joe Del Beato will lead drawing instruction for children and teens ages 7-17.

 

Family STEM Fun

Saturdays at 3 p.m.

March 18 and April 8, 22

Design, create, build and test wind-powered devices and explore wind as a potential energy source in your community. Registration is required. For ages 9-17. Welcome Spring Craft

Thursday, March 23, at 3:30 p.m.

Children and teens are welcome to make a spring craft with the Oceanside Family Success Center.

 

N.J. Makers Day

Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Atlantic City Library will serve as a host site for the third annual New Jersey Makers Day. The library will give children, teens and their families an opportunity to participate in maker-related activities and collaborative project.

 

Spring Break Fitness Session

Thursday, April 13, at 3:30 p.m.

Keep fit and have fun during your spring break with a hula hooping get together with the Oceanside Family Success Center. All ages welcome. Adults must be accompanied by a child.

 

Earth Day Family Craft

Saturday, April 22, at 3 p.m.

Make a recycled craft with family and friends in celebration of Earth Day.

The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is the library’s teen volunteering group, where teens ages 13-18 can help plan teen events, tell the library what materials to buy and earn volunteer hours.

 

Crafty Teens

Saturdays at 2 p.m.

Teens will learn how to decorate eggs with tissue paper (March 18) and create light bulb doodle art (April 22).

AtlantiCare to discuss women’s health, advance care planning at library

 

Representatives from AtlantiCare will lead a pair of programs at the Atlantic City Free Public Library in March and April.

Health Engagement Wellness Specialist Maribel Maldonado will present a Women’s Health Lecture on March 16 from 1-2 p.m. The topics will pertain to preventative health, including diet, exercise, screenings and overall well being. Also, learn what questions to ask your physician at your next wellness physical. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

The library will hold an Introduction to Advance Care Planning on April 20 from 1-2 p.m. The guest speaker will be Advance Care Planning Program Director Christeen Cornell, RN, BSN, CCM. The presentation will provide an overview of what advance care planning is, why it is important and the steps involved in creating an advance directive. There will be time for questions following the presentation.

Library to participate in statewide Makers Day on March 25

 

The Atlantic City Free Public Library will serve as a host site for the Third annual New Jersey Makers Day on Saturday, March 25. The library will give children, teens and their families an opportunity to participate in maker-related activities and collaborative projects from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Main Library’s Teen Makerspace and meeting room, both located on the second floor.

  • Green Screen Photoshop Booth (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) — Participants will be photographed in front of a green screen and then choose which background they want placed behind them. The library will email participants the image.
  • Demonstration Tables (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) — Learn about the technology and tools that are available in the Makerspace, including: a 3D printer, physical computing with Picoboard and Scratch, performing and producing Music with Ableton Live + Push Touchpad, sewing machine, t-shirt design with the silhouette cutter, button maker, STEM learning toys for kids, and knitting and crocheting.
  • DIY Kaleidoscopes with the Oceanside Family Success Center (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) — Participants discover how ordinary beads and cardboard tubes become beautiful reflecting prism patterns.
  • STEM Story Time and Craft (2 p.m.) – Hear the story of a young girl named Rosie Revere, who is a brilliant inventor of gizmos and gadgets. A craft will follow the story.
  • STEM Science Climate Change Project with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension (3 p.m.) – The project uses hands-on activities to help youth understand the science behind climate change, the carbon foot print and weather.

 

Since the Atlantic City Library Makerspace opened in April 2014, local teens have been invited to “Make AC: Dream It, Design It, Do It.” The Makerspace — located in the Teen Space — features a variety of technology and tools, including a 3-D printer, digital audio recording, photography and video equipment, robotics, sewing machine and fiber arts, and more. NJ Makers Day is a statewide event that celebrates and promotes maker culture, as well as the values associated with making, tinkering and STEM-based learning.

Computer, iPad classes for adults 55+ with vision changes

 

The Atlantic City Free Public Library will host computer and iPad classes for adults ages 55 and older who have had a change in their vision. Call 1-888-322-1918, ext. 595, to register.

The classes, part of the Library Equal Access Program (LEAP), are sponsored by the N.J. Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, in partnership with Advancing Opportunities and the New Jersey State Library.

  • Introduction to Computers & Accessibility on March 2, 9, 16, 23 from 10-11:30 a.m. — Are you new to using computers or haven’t used them in several years? In this beginner computers class, participants will learn basic computer terminology, mouse and keyboarding skills, as well as how to navigate a computer. Also, learn about the software available on these computers that can help those with vision issues see and hear what’s on the computer screen.
  • iPad Beginners Class on April 6, 13, 20, 27 from 10-11:30 a.m. — In this beginner class, participants will receive an introduction to the iPad. In addition, find out about the accessibility features on the iPad, such as Zoom and Voice Over (Apple’s built-in screen reader), to access the iPad.
  • iPad Intermediate Class on May 4, 11, 18, 25 from 10-11:30 a.m. — iPad experience is a prerequisite for this course. In this intermediate class, build on your basic iPad skills to learn more about the accessibility features and assistive apps that are available.
